Good News Kishwaukee College Truck Driver Training
Im going to get evaluation and see how much retraining Im going to need
Its going to be on Monday so Im going to hit the books and study up.
as for the driving part I will need a refresher course which Im going to get.
I will admit it was an expennsive class back when I was 19 "$3500" but it was worth it. My Grandfather helped pay for it. I cant wait.

well i definitely need to be retrained but the test went didn't go too bad i around a little. I need to practice my double clutching and practice my yard skills. so a refreshment course is what I'm going to do. My trainer said a company will probably be willing to pay for it or I can get some financial aid.
what really gave me a hard time was the super 10speed trans. Im use to a 13 speed but i can learn it in time.

If you grind those gears long enough, they turn into automatics so I'ver heard. The number of speeds in the transmissons aren't as important as the torque rating, the higher the rating the more teeth on the gears, IE: Mack 300hp engine has gears with 20 teeth but a Cat 600hp has 140 teeth big difference...for a fact though you learn by doing.

Hi gt350tsc, There is an alternative to double clutching. its called floating gears. I used to teach truck driving(something i'm not too proud of) and i found some students picked this up faster than the old d/c. With the transmission in the gear you plan to start out in, start as you normally would, without putting your foot on the clutch, accelerate to the top of that gear. Then just before you intend to shift, put pressure on the shifter in the direction of the next gear. When you let off the accelerator, the shifter will move out of the gear you were in, without hesitation, ( but not too quickly) move the shifter to the next gear position while letting the engine drop rpms. If you do this correctly, the shifter should fall into the next gear without grinding at all. This also works with downshifting, only in reverse. to downshift, give the accelerator a light tap, while pulling the shifter out of gear, rev the engine up, then while it is losing rpms, pull/push the shifter towards the next lower gear and it should go in smoothly. Remember though, the engine cannot be at the top of its rpm range when you do this, it has to be at least 500 rpms below the govorned limit of the engine. For instance, if the maximum rpms in top gear are 1700 rpms, you should let the truck slow down till the rpms are about 1100 then proceed with the downshift. Every truck is different, so get used to the tractor and how it reacts. All this takes is practice and its a lot easier on the clutch and pressure plate than constant double clutching. The only time my foot is on the clutch is when i start out, stopping at lights, and when i reach my destination and/or if something causes a quick stop. Ask around, I'll bet you find more drivers than not float gears. As far as the Super 10 is concerned, it does take some getting used to, but if you can handle a 13 speed overdrive, the 10 speed should be a piece of cake for you. Yard skills aka backing, come with doing it. You should pick that up fairly quickly once you start doing it again. As far as companies paying for you to be retrained, when you apply with them, tell them you've been away from truck driving for awhile and you only need a refresher course. They will probably have you practice in they're yard with one of they're drivers. It never hurts to ask though. Best of luck and be safe. Sorry if this explaination is a little long winded.

While it is nice to know how to shift without the clutch you will have to shift with the clutch in order to pass the driving test for your CDL. I would recommend that you learn to do it the way you will have to do it to pass. Plenty of time after that to learn the other way.

I wouldn't think so. Don't know the laws in all states. I misunderstood your post. I apologize. I thought you were going to school to get your cdl's. Now I see it is only for retraining.

gt350tsc I don't know how employment is in Il. but out here on the west coast there are LTL companies that will hire you with little or no experience you don't get to see country but you are home and you make more money. After a few years you will find that is what it's all about, money and benefits. The romance fades, especially in this day and age of regulation and big brother watching through your quall-com.
