Default Food service

If anyone has questions about the wonderful world of foodservice delivery, feel free to ask, out of 16 years driving, 10 have been in foodservice and I would be glad to answer any questions about this rewarding line of work.

If I didn't have to hand dolly syrup boxes, I would go back. I loved going to the School Districts and Restaurants. I does keep you in shape.

Yea it does wear on you sometimes, this last wed. for instance I was out delivering still at 1900, just one of those days where nothing came off right, the next day was better though. I have just gotten more personally out of this work than I ever did in freight, I guess I'll keep on till my body says stop, I hope thats at least 10 years away, It all depends on what the good Lord has planned for me.

I hope it works out, careful going up and down that ramp in winter. I split my chin on the dolly one day going up a ramp being in a hurry.

The cops in Spring Valley Ca scared the crap out of me one morning, It was 3am or so, and I was opening a Burger King for Ameriserve and I thought I put the right code in the alarm. I was rotating stock in the cooler just happened to turn around to find 2 cops standing there smiling. I guess when they pulled up with no sirens, they realized that the place wasn't being robbed and thought they would sneak up on me and knock a year or two off my life.
Needless to say the dispatcher wasn't smiling when they found out about the false alarm charge.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, Ill quit now.

You didn't hijack anything Steve, thats good stuff man!! That would have took some time off my life too..LOL. I put in the wrong code one night about midnight at a donut shop once, called the owner, he gave me the right code so I shut off the alarm, I told him oh by the way you didn't leave a check, he said oh I'm sorry, I'll be right down, he was real nice about it...I guess he had time to think on his way down because when he got to the shop he was ready to fight, I dumped a load of flour off the wheeler in the dining room floor, put the wheeler up locked the side doors and drove off, called the owner of my company and told her what happened, she backed me all the way, wrote him a nasty letter on company letter head, I got a copy of the letter, she didn't make me go back either, she made him come to Tulsa to get the rest of his product, that was priceless, it was also the last time I ever really had mgmt. go to bat for me and stick to their guns.

I deliever fish, frozen and fresh 7 to 10 hours a day. I no longer need to excersise after work! My body is aching... fingers, hands, legs the easy part is doing the driving.

I had 17 boxes on my two wheeler, boxes of all sizes packed in ice I could barely tilt the cart so it weighed more than me 200lbs. It never fails when I have alot going to a store I can never get close to the &%$# door!

I took this straight truck job because, one old trucker told me... if the economy falls apart you will never be laid off if you haul food.

At the end of the day I have fish oil in my nose and smell like a fish.... but I am glad to be working.

You guys have any tricks to tip back a heavy two wheeler so you can roll??

Bounce it driver, you push it forward enough to get the wheels off the ground and then snatch it back, it takes practice, this is how we used to do Yarn before it all went to Mexico

Also if you have air filled tires you need to keep them pumped up hard or the rocks and weight will make the 2 wheeler unstable

I understand, I have stops that I can't get close to as well, I just pace myself, I am 40, I hurt all over too, I keep doing it because it is personally fufilling to me, I enjoy helping my customers. As far as breaking over the 2 wheeler, I really don't understand what Jeff meant, if you have a good wheeler the wheels will be a little offset, what I mean is when the plate is flat on the ground your wheels will be about a quarter of an inch off the ground, that makes it easy to break over, the size of the boxes matter too, 200# should be no problem to break over unless the boxes are much longer or extend over the plate alot. You can go to modern material's website and look into a magcoa wheeler, magcoa is out of Cadillac MI., they are good wheelers, I have 2 of them, one with disk brakes, and one with paddle brakes, the disk brakes make the wheeler very heavy but it will stop you completely on the ramp with a 500# load, the paddle brakes are light, almost as light as a wheeler with no brakes, the paddles brake against the tires and are designed to slow you down on the ramp. A good wheeler makes all the difference in the world to me.

Dale, thinking about what I wrote, I just got done changing from a 7 3/4" deep plate to a 9" deep solid alluminum plate, it made the paddle brake wheeler a bit heavier but the added benefit of being able to break over all the boxed beef we deliver to the mexican resturants will be worth it, that extra inch and a quarter will make a huge difference, I should be able to stack more now without having to grab the bottom 1 or 2 boxes to break it over with little or no leverage.
