Exclamation Proposed Rule: Minimum Training Requirements for Entry-Level Commercial Motor Vehicle

Proposed Rule: Minimum Training Requirements for Entry-Level Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators

Action:
Notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM); request for comments
Summary:
FMCSA proposes to revise the standards for mandatory training requirements for entry-level operators of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) in interstate operations who are required to possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). The proposed rule would not apply to drivers who currently possess a CDL or obtain a CDL before a date 3 years after a final rule goes into effect. Following that date, persons applying for new or upgraded CDLs would be required to successfully complete specified minimum classroom and behind-the-wheel training from an accredited institution or program.

I think that there should be an apprenticeship for commercial drivers.

Start them with a body job, then move them into something bigger.

In the old days, most freight drivers started on the dock, then moved into the yard shunting trailers.

Now, they go to schools, and start on the big rigs immediately.
